The Silberfeil (Silver Arrow) era was born because of some new regulations for the 1934 Formula racing car season. The (AIACR) specified that the cars weight could not exceed 750 Kilograms. The 1934 W 25 Mercedes Silver Arrow was over weight by just one Kilo.

The Mercedes Benz team decided to sand off the white paint finish of the aluminum body to reveal it's gleaming silver finish. It was just enough to meet the weight requirement and the W 25 went on to take 1st place at Nurburging. A legend was born and many more Silver Arrows went on to win through out the years!

In 1934, the international motor sport governing body specified a maximum weight for Grand Prix racing cars of 750 kg, excluding tyres and fuel. The Germans decided to reduce weight by removing the lead-based paint which denoted its cars’ traditional white livery, exposing distinctive shining aluminium. Victory by one of these lead to the nickname Silver Arrow. Their successors, which were built on the same chassis, continued to race successfully at the Indy 500 after the war.
